What does EVOO sometimes look cloudy?Updated 3 months ago

Cloudiness in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a common phenomenon and is often seen as a positive sign of high quality. This natural occurrence can happen for several reasons:

  1. Indication of Quality: Cloudy EVOO is not a sign of spoilage or poor quality, but could also be an indication that the oil has undergone minimal processing at extraction.

  2. Temperature Changes: The unique fat composition and natural wax content in EVOO can cause the oil to cloud when exposed to cool temperatures. This is especially common when EVOO is stored in cold environments, such as in a refrigerator. The cloudiness is temporary, and the oil will return to its usual clarity once it reaches room temperature.

  3. Extraction at Low Temperatures: Unfiltered EVOO extracted at optimum low temperatures can (or may) also present cloudiness.
