What is Tributyrin and why is it in the Essential Microbiome?Updated 2 hours ago
Tributyrin itself isn’t butyrate, but it releases butyrate after it’s digested. Tributyrin is 3 butyrate molecules + glycerol backbone. When you ingest tributyrin, lipase in the small intestine break it down to release free butyrate.
Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid (SCFA) and the primary fuel source for colon cells. It plays a key role in maintaining gut lining integrity, modulating inflammation, and supporting metabolic and immune health.
Why did we choose Tribytrin and not just Butyrate? Direct butyrate supplements (like sodium butyrate) smell bad, are poorly tolerated, and break down too early in digestion. Tributyrin is a prodrug of butyrate, meaning it’s a smart delivery system designed to get butyrate where it’s needed, and in an active form.
- Clinically backed delivery: Tributyrin is a butyrate prodrug designed to resist gastric acids, allowing butyrate to reach the gut where it can be absorbed. In randomized human studies, tributyrin supplementation was well tolerated and increased butyrate levels.
- Metabolic and Immune benefits: In preclinical studies, tributyrin helped lower blood sugar and insulin levels, reduce inflammation, and boosted immune-regulating cells. These effects were linked to activation of a key gut receptor called GPR109A, a key gut receptor that responds to butyrate.
- Compliments Akkermansia: While Akkermansia helps rebuild the mucus layer, tributyrin nourishes and strengthens it, working together to restore and protect the gut barrier.
